On 11 of March, 2011 Japan experienced the most powerful and destructive earthquake in its modern history. The tsunami, which it provoked, triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster. For a country which had already been facing difficulties and uncertainty in its energy sector and regarded the nuclear energy as an ideal option it was a major blow. The events of the 3/11 caused reassessment of the energy sector and undermined the traditional status quo in Japanese government-industry relationships. This paper assesses the role the Fukushima accident played in the development the energy sphere and the green energy in particular.
