Translating Place Names from English into Russian in Various Subgenres of Fantasy

The goal of this research is to analyze the translation of place names in subgenres of fantasy, as well as to find suitable translation methods for each subgenre. The relevance of this work lies in the insufficient degree of study of the influence of the subgenre of fiction on the features of the translation of place names. Four books in different fantasy subgenres were chosen as the materials to be studied: Eragon, Neverwhere, Uprooted and The Lions of Al-Rassan. This research consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusion, list of references and applications. The first chapter is devoted to the study of the theoretical basis of onomastics and the translation of names, as well as toponymy and the study of fantasy as a genre. The second chapter presents the results of an analysis of the translation of toponyms from English into Russian. At the end of our work we present the conclusions that were made after studying the theoretical base and analysis of the selected material. Applications contain tables with translations of toponyms, their distribution by types, functions and methods of translation. We hope that this research will be useful for further study of the features of literary translation depending on the genres and subgenres.
