Educational Language Policy for Indigenous Peoples of Krasnoyarski Krai

This study focuses on language policy in education in relation to the Indigenous Peoples living in the northern territories of Krasnoyarski krai. The aim of the study is to characterize educational language policy of Krasnoyarski krai for the Indigenous Peoples. Does educational system and current language policy within it really contribute to and achieve the goal of preserving and supporting indigenous languages? The first part of the study gives a historic overview of the main periods in educational language policy and planning from the 18th century to the 1990s on the northern territories of Krasnoyarski krai. Then there is a description of the current language situation within eight indigenous groups of Krasnoyarski krai. In the second part of the study there is analysis of the federal, municipal, and local levels of today’s language planning on the northern territories. The study is based on historical research method, literature and comparative analysis, semi-structured expert interviews.
