The research examines the work of Russian literary magazine “Collection of Foreign Novels and Short Stories” (1856-1885), edited by E. N. Akhmatova. After reconstructing the history of the journal, it is analyzed in its correlation with contemporary periodicals; it allows to reveal the predecessors of Akhmatova’s magazine as well as to show the interrelations with “thick” journals in the range of the translated authors. After this, the journal is examined within the context of women’s participation in literature; the research shows that the early program of the journal shared common traits with Akhmatova’s original writings, presumably aiming at female readership.
