Marina Tsvetaeva - Interpreter from French and into French

Student: Savchenko Sofiia

Supervisor: Oleg Lekmanov

Faculty: Faculty of Humanities

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Final Grade: 8

Year of Graduation: 2020

The graduated paper is dedicated to the Marina Tsvetaeva’s work on the poetic translations from French and into French, which she made in the 1920s – 1940s. The paper consists of two parts, each based on a multi-level comparative analysis of the original poems in French and Russian languages and Tsvetaeva's translations of these poems. Some of the analyzed translations were published first in 2019 and some of them have not been studied at all. The comparative analysis is performed at several levels: semantic (transmitting the meaning and ideas of the original texts), lexical (preserving or changing the vocabulary, the impact of these changes on the meaning), syntactic (rhythm, rhyme, metre). Analysis of Tsvetaeva’s translations into French will help to understand how Tsvetaeva tried to convey the features of the Russian language in French and thus find out why French readers did not accept these translations. Tsvetaeva’s methods identified in the analysis will allow to get an idea of her translation strategy and consider it in the context of the translation tradition accepted in the USSR in the 1930s – 40s.
