Yandex.IO Extension for Control of Smart Home Devices in LAN

The most of smart home systems are controlled with a smartphone. The user manages devices using an application that sends a request to the servers of the smart device vendor. Servers handle the request and send the command to the device. This approach allows you to control your devices from anywhere in the world. Nevertheless, there is one significant flaw. Servers of smart home device vendors may be located far from the location of the devices themselves, and if the network is busy data transfer may have high latency. Moreover, if servers are unavailable, the smart home cannot be controlled at all. However, if the smart home system includes smart speakers with a voice assistant, they can execute preloaded scripts and control smart devices within the same local network directly. Yandex Smart Home is one of such systems. This article presents the extension of the Yandex.IO platform for local management of Yandex Smart Home devices. The main idea behind the development is to detect smart devices in the local network using mDNS protocol, use the V8 JavaScript engine to execute scripts provided by device manufacturers on the smart speaker, and transfer data directly to discovered devices. Keywords: smart home, Internet of Things, local fulfilment, wireless LAN, Yandex.IO
