Intellectuals at Court of Charles V: Political Thought and Discoursive Strategies

Student: Ponomareva Maria

Supervisor: Alexander V. Marey

Faculty: Faculty of Humanities

Educational Programme: Medieval Studies (Master)

Final Grade: 10

Year of Graduation: 2020

The research is dealing with french political thought in the time of Charles V of France (1364–1380) on the basis of two fundamental political writings of the time: Aristotle's "Politics" as translated into French and largely commented by Nicole Oresme and "Le Songe du Vergier", compiled anonymously. Both texts being translations reflect two different ways of political thinking, a theological one, and a legal one. Strategies of translation, political claims, and meaning of the key political notions lie within the scope of present investigation. The relation between strategies of translation and features of political thought for each of the writings is revealed.
