1917. Free History: Follow Russian Revolution on Twitter

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the 1917 revolution, a milestone that changed the Russian historical path once and forever. The ‘1917. Free History’ project offers a thrilling and easy way to follow the events of that crucial year online.

1917. Free History resembles a social network. Every day, when you visit the site, you find out what happened exactly one hundred years ago: what various people were thinking and what was happening to each of them during this eventful year. You can’t fast-forward into the future; you can only follow the events as they happened in real time.

A team of journalists, experts, designers, animators and illustrators joined together to create a project that helps us to find out about the history of 1917 first-hand. The project creators scoured archives and storerooms for texts, photographs and videos, many of which have never seen the light of day before. The project consists entirely of primary sources. All the texts have been taken from genuine documents written by historical figures: letters, memoirs, diaries, and other historical documents. When you mouse over the ‘I’ sign next to each entry, you can see a reference to the source of the ‘tweet’.

The project is available in English. If you are learning Russian, you are welcome to check out the Russian version, which includes even more material.
