Railway Tours in Moscow and Beyond

Retro steam trains or narrow-gauge railways are not only a way of travelling to interesting places, but can be an attraction in themselves.

Several companies offer unconventional railway tours around Russia, and some of them take place without leaving Moscow or the Moscow region.

With Russian Railway Tours, you can go to an early 20th-century engine house by a steam train, or use it to visit the towns of the Golden Ring. A trip to the Moscow Engine House costs 3,600 roubles, while prices for a trip to Vladimir and Suzdal start from 7,100 roubles. The company also offers a choice of longer tours on modern trains, including a railway trip to Beijing.

Russian Heritage Railways doesn’t have a fully functional English website yet, but the tours it offers are definitely worth checking out. The organizers find rarely used and almost forgotten railways and organize tours to hard-to-reach places. The selection includes weekend tours from Moscow. A three-day tour on a retro train in the Caucasus will cost about 10,000 roubles, with accommodation included. The company also offers a one-day tour on a retro bus around Moscow’s villages (yes, there still are villages inside Moscow!), with the next trip taking place on October 7th. The tours are currently conducted in Russian so take your buddy along!
