Transportation in Moscow

When you arrive in Moscow by plane (you will arrive in one of three major airports Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo or Vnukovo) you can either request an individual pickup service or use the Aeroexpress http://www.aeroexpress.ru/en/  to get to the city center. (it will cost you about USD 12)

There are several ways you can travel around Moscow (from the campus to the dorm, to the airport, to different parts of the city etc).

Underground: The most convenient is the Moscow Metro (aka Subway or Rapid Transit System). Due to the high intensity of Moscow traffic, the Metro is the best way to ensure you are going to be on time http://engl.mosmetro.ru/. A one-way trip costs about USD 0.8 . You can get a discount in the Metro as soon as you get your HSE Student ID. Check the fares here http://engl.mosmetro.ru/pages/page_0.php?id_page=8.

This is the Metro sign. Each time you see it, it means there is an entrance to the station (the station can be either at ground level or underground)

Taxi: We recommend you to use the official registered taxi serivces like this http://www.500-0-500.ru/eng/ or this http://www.taxi-in-moscow.com/en/auto There are many illegal taxis in Moscow which may offer you a cheaper alternative but we highly recommend to refrain from using them as it may be unsafe.

Public transportation: Moscow has a developed system of public transportation which includes buses, trolley buses, street cars/trams. You can purchase tickets from the drivers or in the booths near stations. Ask your student-buddy to tell you more about using this kind of transportation.

Railway transportation: Russia has a developed system of railways. For travel outside the Moscow region (for example to St.Petersburg, Nizhniy Novgorod or other cities within 1000-2000 km radius) you can use a train. It is generally cheaper than a plane (if you do not catch a good deal). You can purchase tickets at the railway terminals. More information can be found here http://eng.rzd.ru/statice/public/rzdeng?STRUCTURE_ID=4 Do not forget to inform the CIE team that you are travelling outside of the Moscow region - we will be glad to advise you regarding the registration and travelling matters.
