‘The Competition Lets Students Feel Like Scientists’

On February 5, 2024, the award ceremony for the winners and laureates of the Student Research Paper Competition (SRPS) 2023 took place. The competition received 1,730 papers in 25 categories from university students across Russia.
The first SRPC competition was held at HSE University in 2003, and was initially open only to HSE University students. By 2016, students from other universities began to take part. Today, the SRPC competition is open to everyone, and this year, the award ceremony celebrated its 20th anniversary.
‘I would like to congratulate all the winners and laureates of the competition on behalf of the entire university. Winning this competition is not only recognition of your high level of preparation, but also an assessment of your potential as a researcher,’ said Vadim Radaev, HSE University First Vice Rector. ‘I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the academic supervisors of the competition participants, all the experts who checked the papers, and the members of the organising committee.’
‘The competition lets students feel like scientists. I think that our goal for next year will be to attract even more participants,’ said Dmitry Zemtsov, HSE University Vice Rector. He described winning the competition as ‘a very serious achievement’ and noted that all papers are evaluated anonymously, which fosters trust in the competition.
‘This year, about 1,000 experts from various HSE University institutes, faculties, and research departments were involved in evaluating the work,’ said Andrey Kozhanov, Director of the Centre for Student Academic Development at HSE University.
To evaluate the entries, the organising committee creates a subject commission for each area. At the first stage, each research work is assessed by two independent experts. At the second stage, based on the results of the examination, members of the subject commission review the paper and sum up the results of the competition.
Vladimir Fayer, Deputy Dean of HSE University’s Faculty of Humanities, addressed all students of the humanities. ‘I think we are doing some very important things here,’ he said. ‘Of course, we will not deny the achievements of other sciences, but I think what you and I are doing gives meaning to our lives.’ He also expressed his hope that winning and simply participating in the competition would give all participants self-confidence and support in future endeavours.
Vice Rector Sergey Roshchin announced the addition of a new non-subject category in next year’s competition: best thesis prepared by artificial intelligence. It will be open to bachelor’s and master’s graduates of all educational programmes at HSE University who successfully defend their thesis in 2024. The protocols for the use of AI-based tools employed to prepare the thesis will be assessed by a dedicated expert commission.
The winners of the competition shared their impressions of the event with the HSE News Service and spoke about their own work and plans.
Elvira Slobodyan, first-year student of the Master’s in Culture Studies, HSE University
This is not my first experience of participating in a research competition; I applied when I was a third-year undergraduate student. Back then, I also took third place. This year, I decided to compete again. My work is based on a thesis project where I researched podcasts about art. For my paper, I chose one chapter dedicated to ekphrasis from these podcasts. Ekphrasis is the description of works of visual culture in oral form, because, in podcasts, the visual component is absent, but it is recreated through the hosts’ speech. I researched how and through what means this happens. Now I am working with cinema—I am studying the aesthetics of dance in films. My next research project will be devoted to visual culture.
Diana Chazova, fourth-year student of the Bachelor’s in Advertising and Public Relations, HSE University
This is the second year that I have taken part in the research competition, and this time, I was interested in presenting a co-authored paper. My colleagues and I wrote it in our third year of university and decided to participate in the competition the following year. We were confident in our work, and I was very confident in my colleagues. Together, we had great synergy to create the perfect submission. Our topic was ‘Communication barriers and drivers in building the career paths of current and potential young employees using the example of the X5 Group.’ Our work was done based on a business game we took part in during our third year: real clients came to us, gave us a brief, and we solved the case.
Alisher Aslanov, fourth-year student of the Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics and Information Science, HSE University
I wrote my paper while on academic leave, so I had quite a lot of time. As a result, I wrote a good mathematical text and decided to submit it to the SRPC. Winning was a big surprise—I thought I would be a laureate at most, and only if I was lucky. Now I plan to finalise the study and publish it.

On September 1, HSE University announced the start of its annual Student Research Paper Competition (SRPC-2022). Participation is open to students of Russian and international universities and to 2022 graduates. Last year, a total of 2,196 papers were submitted to the SRPC, of which 435 were from external participants.

On September 29, the HSE Academic Council approved the Regulation on Scholarships for the Winners of the HSE University Student Research Paper Competition - 2021. The competition winners will now receive scholarships of 20,000 roubles per month.

Nearly 2,000 Papers, 23 Nominations, and 165 Winners in 2020 Student Research Paper Competition
The annual awards ceremony of the Student Research Paper Competition (NIRS) was held on February 8, Russian Science Day. This year, 165 people received awards, including not only HSE students but also contestants from Saint Petersburg State University, Moscow State University, Far Eastern Federal University, Mount Holyoke College (USA), and other universities. Another 160 participants became laureates of the competition, with 1,924 papers submitted in total.
Student Research Paper Competition 2020 Accepting Submissions
Any student or 2020 graduate of a Russian or international university is eligible to take part in the Student Research Paper Competition. Papers can be submitted from September 1 to October 15. The competition has been held at HSE University since 2003.
HSE’s Annual Student Research Paper Competition Now Open
HSE’s annual student research paper competition has begun accepting applications for the 2019 cycle. The competition is open not only to students of HSE University but to students of any university, both in Russia and abroad. You can submit research papers in Russian or in English. The application deadline is October 15.
