Master dissertation is headlined “A comparative study of organizational culture of university and a commercial company”. It was found that organizational culture is an important factor influencing success of companies that need to be managed in the right way.

This paper is focused on organizational culture of entrepreneurial university because this is a poorly understood phenomenon in comparison with researches of commercial companies’ culture, especially among Russian studies. There are few definitions of this concept but the meaning is the same – this kind of university functions as a commercial organization on the competitive market. In this context it seems to be interesting to make a comparative research of such universities culture and culture of a commercial company.

The aim of our paper is to define similarities and differences between organizational cultures of an entrepreneurial university and a commercial company.

We chose method of R. Goffy and G. Jones “Cube Double S” to diagnose the type of culture because it has good diagnostic abilities. In contrast to the concept of K. Cameron and R. Quinn, which is the most popular methodic in Russia, this method is almost unknown among Russian researchers. Therefore we decided to translate and to test it in a university and a commercial company.

During the research we interviewed 44 employees of Capella plant, which is a part of Procter & Gamble company, and 41 employees of the Higher School of Economics in Nizhniy Novgorod. As a result, we found out that there is a communal type of organizational culture at the plant, which is the result of continuous work of plant management team. They have formed the culture since Procter & Gamble came at the plant seven years ago.

In the Higher School of Economics in Nizhniy Novgorod there is no precise type of organizational culture now, it was proved by different parts of methodic. The absence of clear culture in the university is an indicator that it is necessary to create and to implement a program of culture development at the university.
