Music Preferences in Schools: the Case of “VK” Playlists

This study is dedicated to the research of music preferences among school students from Saint-Petersburg. Also it was tested if there is a significant relation between music tastes and socioeconomic status. The study is based on the data conducted from social network site “VK”. It consists of music playlists of school students. All songs were classified with the help of “Gracenote” data bases. Data on schools was provided by Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science. After the analysis of 1 300 000 audio it was found that students from schools with higher socioeconomic status preferred rock and alternative music more that students from other schools.
