Recognized Heritage: Factors of Silver Age Artists Recognition

Recognition is constructed by several institutions, such as museums and educational institutions. Besides, artist`s resources also influence the process of recognition. The main purpose of this work is figuring out which factors influence artist`s recognition. The case of Silver age (1880-1930) was considered, 332 artists` biographies were analyzed, recognition was measured in two ways: inclusion in permanent Russian museum in Saint-Petersburg and Tretyakov gallery in Moscow exposures (number of paintings) and inclusion in modern art textbooks (number of pages devoted to each of artist). As independent variables some socio-economic artists` characteristics were fixed: sex, ethnicity, place of birth, father occupation, father state, place of education, art degree, membership in art associations, participation in exhibitions, state orders and state rewards. Regression analysis showed that educational resources are more influential rather than family resources. Artist`s recognition during life do not influent his posthumous recognition. Participation in exhibitions increase artist`s chances to be included in modern art history textbooks. In general, recognition in Russian context is more conservative than in similar foreign studies.
