Relevant IT Terminology Specifics: The Case of English-Russian Translation through Comparative Analysis

The rapid development of computers and information technology from the middle of the 20th century onwards has by now enabled them to permeate almost every sphere of human life and activity. Possibly one of the most conspicuous reflections of the influence of technology, namely information technology, is the emergence of countless new technical terms, especially in the English language. The ubiquity of such terms and their tendency to go out of date fast poses a certain challenge for translators, who often have to either carefully choose or create the most adequate equivalent themselves. The present research aims to establish the main peculiarities of relevant English and Russian IT terminology. To this end, the research presents a comparative analysis of English and Russian IT texts taken from trial translations provided by the translation agency "Janus", a concise glossary and a quantitive analysis of the results. The research proves the importance of translation creativity in the process of translating relevant IT terminology and sheds light on the connection between models of term formation and translation strategy. Moreover, the research hopes to provide guidelines for aspiring technical translators and translation students, as well as translation scholars.
