Five Reasons to Attend Pokrovka Wild Travel Festival

On January 25, the Wild Travel Festival will be held at the HSE building on Pokrovsky Boulevard. HSE Life shares why you should pull away from student worries and immerse yourself in adventure.

Reason 1: Meeting ‘wild’ travellers in person

One of the main reasons to attend the festival is to personally meet interesting people who travel thousands of kilometres in search of themselves and hear their amazing stories. Dmitry Vlasov will tell about how he and his friends from Bauman University bought an old Russian car and decided to drive to Dubai.

Journalist and photographer Svetlana Gusarova will share her experience going to one of the most expensive countries in the world – Japan. She’ll tell you how she survived in the country on 1,000 roubles a day, slept in the open air, hitchhiked dozens of prefectures and gave her assurances that Miyazaki did not lie.

Reason 2: Becoming immersed in national culture

Four HSE national associations - Armenian, Jewish, Uzbek and French - will be open in the corners of the hall on the third floor of the Cultural Centre.  Here you’ll learn more about the cultures of these countries, speak their languages and speak with representatives of a particular nationality. Together with the international student organization AEGEE you’ll also pack a backpack that will meet the strictest hand luggage requirements for budget airlines.

Reason 3: Watching an interesting movie

Two films - ‘Guardians of the Altai’ and ‘Across the US by Freight Trains’ - will be screened during the festival.

The latter was produced by Ilya Bondyrev, a traveller from Bryansk who decided to travel all over North America on freight trains. A well-developed network of railway tracks, where freight trains carry various raw materials, allowed Ilya to quickly and freely cross America and reach his main goal — the abandoned Magic Bus, which has become a symbol of freedom thanks to the film ‘Into the Wild’.

Reason 4: Learning folk dance

In the dance hall of the Cultural Centre representatives of Armenian and Uzbek associations will teach everyone their national dances. Learn a few movements from Harashima Lazgi, and you can show off at parties.

Reason 5: Going to an indie band concert

Music concerts are a long-standing tradition at HSE festivals. At 20:00, Lemu will perform for guests at the hall on the second floor of the Cultural Centre. The Ethiopian girl who sings in the metro and Moscow trains hitchhiked more than 100,000 kilometres. Don’t miss her warm and intimate evening performance!
