On December 21, HSE students organized an Art & Science space called ‘NOCH’ (‘NIGHT’) on the site of the SAMSKARA exhibition at the ArtPlay Design Center in Moscow. Over the course of the seven-hour event, participants discussed the search for extraterrestrial civilizations, the significance of gender differences in post-industrial society, the use of modern technologies to meld art and science, and other exciting topics.

The exposition ‘Osip Mandelstam – End of the Road’ located in the HSE building at 20 Myasnitskaya Street in Moscow reconstructs the final 11 weeks of the poet’s life and profiles many of his contemporaries.

The cafeteria is one of the main points of attraction for students in any HSE building. Now HSE students in the humanities and physics, who study at 21/4 Staraya Basmannaya Ulitsa, also have one to visit. The HSE news service visited the renovated cafeteria to learn whether it’s better than the legendary cafeteria on Myasnitskaya (spoiler alert: it seems so) and to ask the brand chef what meals are worth trying.

On May 20 the HSE School of Asian Studies organized the annual ‘Oriental Crazy Day’ event. Students and lecturers worked together to capture the atmosphere of ‘the East’, and, on Saturday, the HSE building on Trifonovskaya ulitsa opened its doors to everyone interested in Asian studies.

The F. F. Martens International Humanitarian Law Competition has been held by the regional delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Russia, Belarus and Moldova several times. This year, HSE students from Nizhny Novgorod took part in the competition for the first time and came away with some great results.

On December 2, 2016 a traditional Culture Day was held at HSE St. Petersburg. Students from 21 countries took part in this colorful and enjoyable celebration. International students organized competitions and performances and cooked traditional food in order to showcase their home countries’ unique cultures. The organizers say over 500 people attended the event.

On November 17, 2016 the 48th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian studies(ASEEES) took place in Washington, DC (USA), bringing together over 2,500 researchers from around the world.

On October 4, a lecture and business game were organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and held at HSE Saint Petersburg.

On September 26th, 2016,  the 2nd International Student Conference ‘Russia and Egypt: Joint Future’ was held at HSE. The event was organized by the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs with the support of the Egyptian Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Egyptian Youth National Organization. Students and doctoral students from Cairo University and several Russian universities took part in the event.

In July 2016, lecturers of the HSE master’s programmes in Population and Development andPublic Policy took a week-long exploratory journey to Kenya, where they visited Maseno University, the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and Nairobi University.
