From Archival Maps to Geoinformation Technologies: Second-Year Students' Undertake Field Practice at Sochut Dendropark
How did 19th-century archival maps transform into three-dimensional forest models? In July 2026, second-year students of the Geoinformation Technology and Spatial Modelling track at the HSE Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technologies conducted comprehensive mapping research at the Sochut Dendropark near the town of Stepanavan in Armenia. Founded in 1933 by biologist Edmond Leonovich, the arboretum is the first scientific and experimental forest ‘laboratory’ in the Transcaucasus. Here, centuries-old deciduous forests coexist with exotic coniferous plantings: Canadian hemlock, Himalayan cedar, and giant sequoias.
‘The “Butterfly Effect” Is no Longer an Abstract Idea, but a Reality that You Constantly Observe’
The bachelor’s programme ‘Geography of Global Changes and Geoinformation Technology’ is offered by the Faculty of Geography and Geoinformation Technology, one of the newest at HSE University. One year ago, Yulia Kuznetsova came on as the programme’s academic supervisor. In this interview for the HSE News Service, Yulia Kuznetsova explains her job duties, where HSE geography students do their field work, and why geography itself can make you happy.
