As the situation with COVID-19 has shown, mistakes associated with insufficiently developed policy measures in medicine, science, education and other socially significant sectors of the economy are very costly for society. Until four years ago there was no simple tool for linguists to mark a set of points on a map with different colors. A point corresponded to a language, and its color corresponded to a linguistic feature of the language. This inspired George Moroz, of HSE’s Linguistic Convergence Laboratory and School of Linguistics, to create a new software product that turned out to be very popular: lingtypology.

At the close of 2019, HSE University once again ranked first among Russian organizations in the RePEc/IDEAS (Research Papers in Economics) world ranking and advanced to a record-breaking 129^th place. The ranking evaluates economic, academic, and research institutions based on their publication activity in economics.

The article by Andrei Yakovlev and Anton Aisin "Friends or Foes? The Effect of Governor-Siloviki Interaction on Economic Growth in Russian Regions" was published in the 4th volume of the Russian Politics (RUPO).

Language Science Press has published a book on the Mehweb language, edited by Michael Daniel and Nina Dobrushina of the Linguistic Convergence Laboratory and Dmitry Ganenkov of the Laboratory of Caucasian languages.

At the end of the summer members of the Laboratory presented their researches at two large international conferences on linguistics — SLE and ALT.

LCSR and Journal "Monitoring of Public Opinion: Economic and Social Changes" announce special issue call for papers «Happiness and Subjective Well-being in Russia» (Volume 1, 2020). Guest editors: Eduard Ponarin (PhD, LCSR head), Anna Almakaeva (PhD, LCSR deputy head) and Natalia Gashenina (PhD, Public Opinion Foundation – FOM). Manuscripts should be submitted in Russian or in English by the 31st of July 2019.
