Career Opportunities
Business administration is a professional activity that includes a wide range of tasks: from setting goals for a business organization and choosing ways to achieve them to providing the necessary motivation for employees, accounting, analysis, and evaluation of results. Both managers, who have subordinates, and employees (specialists) of departments of the company management apparatus - marketing, sales, personnel, strategic development, etc. - are engaged in this activity. Those who see themselves in the future as heads of projects, organizations in various fields of activity, who plan to create their own business, as well as will be engaged in management.
Management activity requires talent and practice, but systematic education in the field of management develops abilities and creates a good basis for understanding the experience gained during the work in the organization. It is not possible to get such an education from books alone: an academic mentor and group project work are required.
The importance of a basic university education in management in developing one's ability to lead others can be compared to the importance of learning a foreign language in high school. It is well known that those who for various reasons did not learn a foreign language in high school find themselves in the role of catching up with colleagues who had a good high school language training for the rest of their lives. It's the same in business administration. If a person has fundamental knowledge, the subsequent practical experience is strung on that basis, better assimilated, more deeply analyzed. That's why studying on the educational programmes in the field of Management contributes to the formation of the fundamental advantage over those who are mastering the management of business and people in business exclusively in the empirical way, by trial and error.
Graduates of the programme Business Administration master a wide range of competencies in various functional areas of management, which allows them to build their career in the future, moving both vertically and horizontally within the organization, periodically changing areas of activity (gaining experience in sales, marketing, manufacturing, strategic planning service, etc.). This, as the world experience shows, is one of the most effective models of forming competences of top-qualified managers.
At the same time, the educational programme does not aim to prepare 21-year-old "captains" of Russian business. Most of the graduates from the Bachelor’s programme become specialists in the management staff of Russian and international companies, and start their own (small) businesses. Among the graduates of the Graduate School of Business there are those who, after working for several years as a specialist, have taken senior positions. Commitment and high leadership qualities, necessary for a modern manager, are also inculcated and developed in the highly competitive student environment of HSE.
