Student international academic mobility has been an integral part of life at HSE University for a long time. Every year, hundreds of HSE students study abroad at universities all over the world.  Even now, during the pandemic, many of them did not come back to Russia, opting instead to continue their studies abroad. Students spoke with the HSE News Service about life in the university dorms during quarantine and taking their programme courses and exams online.

HSE Marks 5th Year of Teaching on Coursera

On February 24, 2014, HSE launched its first course on the Coursera online education platform. Along with St. Petersburg State University and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, HSE was one of the first Russian universities to host a course on the platform. Now HSE ranks among the top ten universities with the highest number of courses available on the platform, offering 91 courses which have garnered 1.6 million subscriptions.

Large online courses will become even more popular since the quality and accessibility of education is rising. They will not, however, replace traditional in-person interactions between student and teacher. This was the conclusion of participants in the eSTARS 2018 international academic conference on the present and future of online education. HSE and the online learning platform Coursera teamed up to host the event in Moscow on December 5-6.

Blended Learning: Taking Teaching Beyond University

On March 22, the Higher School of Economics hosted a university conference, ‘Blended Learning: Experience, Success and Prospects.’ More than 100 teachers, academics and administrative staff from all HSE campuses met to discuss the strategic and practical issues of integrating a mixed education format into the learning process, as well as the challenges and benefits of combining traditional education with distance and online methods.

The number of people subscribing to HSE’s online courses on Coursera, one of the world’s most popular online learning platforms, has reached 1 million. Users represent nearly the entire globe, with HSE courses being taken in nearly 200 countries.

As of today, HSE offers 46 courses on Coursera, an international online education platform, and one third of them are English-taught. This means that HSE is one of the Top 10 universities by the number of online courses offered on that platform.
