Interdisciplinary Conference "Researching the Deaf community" - 2024

We invite you to take part in the Interdisciplinary Conference
"Researching the Deaf community"

The GES-2 House of Culture and the International Laboratory for Research on Social Integration of the Higher School of Economics announces the acceptance of applications for participation in the Second Annual Interdisciplinary Conference "Researching the Deaf community", which will be held from May 31 to June 2, 2024.

We invite researchers of the deaf and sign language community, as well as specialists in the theory and practice of social integration in Russia and abroad: scientists, consultants, practitioners, students and postgraduates, representatives of public organizations and businesses to participate.

We will be glad if representatives of the community and their hearing associates, including parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, hearing children of deaf parents, teachers of correctional and inclusive schools, researchers and specialists in Russian sign language and culture of the deaf, take part in the discussions.

The conference will be held in an offline format (address: Moscow, 15 Bolotnaya Embankment) with the possibility of remote connection to individual sections. Following the results of the conference, it is planned to publish a collection of articles, all materials of which will be anonymously reviewed.

Areas of work of the conference:

  • Sign language and modern approaches to linguistic research of the deaf
  • Prospects for the development of the field of work and employment of the deaf
  • New practices of the deaf in the era of technologization and digitalization
  • Culture and identity of deaf and hard of hearing people
  • The representation of deafness in popular culture and the media environment
  • Sign language in education: the transformation of ideology and practices
  • Well-being, independence and health of the deaf in the context of socio-economic transformations
  • Modern approaches to the methodology of research on the deaf community
  • Transformation of sign language translation techniques and practices

To submit an application for participation in the conference with a report, you must fill out the registration form.

You can also suggest and hold your own session on a topic related to the deaf community or sign language. To do this, we need to receive applications with abstracts from at least three speakers from different institutions who plan to participate in your session. After that, as the head of the section, you need to send an email rdc@ges-2.org with an indication of the proposed topic of the session and a list of reports included in it with the authors.

If you want to suggest a topic for a round table or an open discussion, write to the mail rdc@ges-2.org the topic and format, a brief summary, as well as a list of potential participants (at least three people representing different institutions) with whom a preliminary agreement has already been reached.

If you want to listen to the reports and participate in the discussions, the registration form will open in early May 2024 on the website of the GES-2 House of Culture. Leave your contacts in the form, we will remind you about registration.

  • Applications are accepted: January 19 – March 24, 2024
  • Consideration of applications: March 15 – April 15, 2024
  • Publication of the list of participants: April 22, 2024
  • Dates of the conference: May 31 – June 2, 2024
