Personal profile

In the early years of my student life I wanted to become archeologist but then changed my mind. Archeology mostly speaks about the material world created by individuals in the past, and I was interested in the individuals themselves. For this reason I finally went into studying autobiographical writings and other personal documents of the Italian Renaissance. Later, after the defense of my kandidatskaia dissertation, the sphere of my research interests began rapidly expanding. First it covered personal evidences created in Western Europe in pre-modern times, then I turned to the Old Russian autobiographical texts and to other the topics of early modern and contemporary history that are not connected to autobiographical writings. These studies were followed by my reflections on the historian’s “craft” in our days.
Today my research interests loosely fit into three general topics: “European Culture History of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Time,” “History and Theory of Autobiographical Writings,” and “Theory and History of Historical Knowledge.” Though they are not limited with these three: our present-day life sometime raises so fascinating themes for research and asks so unpredicted questions that it is worth diverting attention away and start exploring new subjects.
I work at the Faculty of Philosophy from its foundation in 2004. My teaching comprises “General History,” “History of World Civilizations,” “Western Autobiography as a Historic-cultural Phenomenon,” “Academic communication and writing,” “Basic Forms of Student Writing in Contemporary Universities” (the last two in English) and some other courses. I am the head of the research group on interdisciplinary study of autobiography, which brings together students and established Russian and international scholars. Starting from 1995 I have sporadically worked as a visiting scholar and professor in American and European universities and research centers. I have no doubts that this international experience is extremely important and beneficial for my research and teaching.
