In October, the International Laboratory on World Order Studies and the New Regionalism hosted a research seminar in which Dr. Glenn Diesen, Professor in the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE, presented a recent paper entitled ‘Geoeconomics in the Fourth Industrial Revolution: The Restructuring of Global Value Chains.’ The discussion centred on how technology has become increasingly important for competitiveness in global value chains. This subsequently incentivizes government support for technological development as the main tool for Great Power rivalry, which can be seen in the cooperation between Western governments and corporations over the past several decades to develop technological leadership with high-value activities and concurrently engineer hierarchically-structured global value chains.

International Laboratory for the Study of Russian and European Intellectual Dialogue was established at HSE in 2017 with the purpose of showcasing the Russian philosophy, literature and art, and focusing on its universal spiritual significance for the fate of Europe and Russia. HSE News Service has talked to Leonid Luks, Academic Supervisor of the laboratory, about the place of Russian culture in the world and the research the laboratory is undertaking.

Irina Abankina, Director of the HSE Institute of Education, Tenured Professor and Member of the HSE Academic Council, spoke about her life in academia and work at HSE, for the project ‘Research at HSE: For School and for Life’.

Leonid Gokhberg, HSE First Vice Rector, Director of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge, spoke on his first steps in academia, working with foreign researchers, on foresight research as well as shared his thoughts on HSE research development.

Together with his colleagues, Igor Kukushkin, Chief Research Fellow at the Institute of Solid State Physics (Russian Academy of Sciences) and Professor at the Faculty of Physics at the Higher School of Economics, has founded two scientific-commercial enterprises. Their products are used in a range of areas, including pharmaceuticals and medicine, as well as to control the quality of various materials and even in the fight against terrorism. Igor Kukushkin spoke to the HSE news service about how to combine science and business.

The Contribution to Science and Education Award, established by the HSE, recognises outstanding contributions to academic development and international academic cooperation.

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor at the HSE Faculty of Humanities’ School of History, and Professor Emeritus at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Professor Filatova is also the author of six books on African history. She spoke about her experiences of teaching, research and traveling through Africa.

Irina Savelieva, HSE Tenured Professor, Professor in the Faculty of Humanities’ School of History, Director of the Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities, spoke on her deciding to work in academia, research and teaching achievements as well as her decision to join HSE.

Andrei Yakovlev, HSE Tenured Professor, Director of the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies,  member of the Academic Council spoke on his path to science, business journalism and international relations, global migration of scientific staff, as well as shared his thoughts on HSE research development.

Alexey Rutkevich, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor at the School of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, spoke on his foray into science, research interests, as well as shared his thoughts on a philosopher’s position in society.
