«War and Holocaust in the USSR»

This lecture course explores new research and historiography on the subject of the «Holocaust on Soviet soil» — that is, the genocide of Soviet Jews by the Germans during the Great Patriotic War. We begin by examining the traditional paradigm of the Holocaust, a paradigm based mainly on the fate of western Jews. We then explore what happens to the paradigm when we include the Soviet experience of the Holocaust. The lectures also explore the ways in which the «conduct of war» and state ideology helped shape the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. Finally, we will look at the legacies of the Holocaust today.
 
Professor Lynne Viola is «University Professor» of History at the University of Toronto in Canada. She received her BA from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York and her PhD from Princeton University. Her books include Krest'ianskii bunt v epokhu Stalina: Kollektivizatsiia i kul'tura krest'ianskogo soprotivleniia, trans. A.V. Barden (Moscow: Rosspen, 2010) (Translation of Peasant Rebels Under Stalin); Krest'ianskii gulag, trans. E. A. Osokina (Moscow: Rosspen, 2010) (Translation of The Unknown Gulag); and most recently, Stalinist Perpetrators on Trial: Scenes from the Great Terror in Soviet Ukraine (NY: Oxford U. Press, 2017).
