Course Syllabus

Abstract

This blended-learning course examines the theories and practices of international human resource management (IHRM). The course addresses the core issues in IHRM. The topics of the course can be divided into three broad themes: (1) traditional approaches to IHRM (eg. Expatriate management) (2) new perspectives on IHRM (eg. Managing people in cross-border mergers and acquisitions, alternatives to expatriate assignments, ‘global’ careers), and (3) the link between firm strategy, capabilities and HRM.

  • The main study objective is to learn how to conduct strategic human resource management in an international setting
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • You will be introduced to the concept of strategic human resource management and learn about different strategies companies take to doing their business; and about different strategic theories of human resource management.
  • You will learn about: sustainable human resource management;. the paradoxical tensions in human resource management and the coping strategies used to deal with them; the sustainable human resource model.
  • You will learn about: the institutional context of international business; different employment standards and laws that relate to international human resource management; obstacles to multinational bargaining; approaches to multinational enterprises and labor relations.
  • You will learn how companies can find the balance in deciding whether to standardise or localise their common HRM practices and policies; what impacts the decision to standardise or localise and how that decision impacts the operations of the company.
  • You will learn how companies manage their expatriates; who is an expatriate and why companies use expatriates; what challenges there are in international assignments and how to manage the whole expatriation process.
  • You will learn what takes place in M&As and why they often fail; how the soft side impacts the success of M&A and how HRM can guide the post-acquisition integration process.
  • Уou will learn about: international human resource management and why businesses may choose to go international; the challenges and development in international human resources management; the stages of internationalization of companies and methods of entry into international business
  • Уou will learn how to develop leaders in a multinational organization; how companies plan development activities for their leaders based on their strategic objectives and company culture.

  • non-blocking good questions/answers
    valuable questions, comments and/or answers marked by star, awarded by professor/student group that were valid and valuable for the whole group and brought students further in their understanding (professor each meeting at the end announces last names, who got stars and why (at the end of the course professor announces how many starts weight and give full or part of total 10% allocated)
  • non-blocking Elective assignment
    Trainer dives assignment after seminar. Assignment is related to resent lectures/seminar topic. Trainer announced date and time for assignment collection. After the end of time assignment are not accepted. Some assignments will be elective and can give more points for the final score for the course. Тotal 5 cases/tasks, each weight the same, marked as pass or fail based on the completeness of the answer to the right question/task, quality and quantity of arguments, clarity of text). Each assignment is elective and can be completed during certain time period announced by professor.
  • non-blocking knowledge quizzes
    passing the quizzes (Each meeting at random time there will be knowledge test in a form of multiple choice. The week following the test professor announces the score. The weight of each question is indicated during its passing process). There will be 8 quizzes, each has the same weight. Can be done only through the announced timeframe.
  • non-blocking seminar activities
    5 team case studies (professor and sometimes external speaker announces the winning team (pass/fail) based on the completeness of the answer to the right question/task, quality and quantity of arguments, clarity of presentation). Can be done during seminars only.• Almost every meeting there will be 1,20 hours of lecture/discussion and the second 1,2 hour is dedicated to the interview and case study with the live speaker from real international company. Participants will be united into teams to get more info, solve and then present the case solution. Best team is awarded with points. Speaker, professor decides who gets the most points. Team inside decides who gets most points.
  • non-blocking written exam
    1 hour final tests on all the topics. Conducted in a form of multiple choice/short cases. Test results are announced in several days after the test is taken and weights for each question are indicated and shown during the quiz time.Video lectures, presentations, and pre-reads will be provided for students to prepare for exams.
