Film industry has been under investigation from the social scientists for the last 30 years. A lot of the work has been dedicated to the analysis of the sequel effect on the film revenue. The current paper employs data on the database of the wide releases in the US during the 2010-2014 time period in order to provide a new look on the sequel return to the domestic box office. Heckman and nonparametric sample selection approach is taken in order to control non-random nature of sequels’ sample. It is found that sequels are successful only due to the glory of the first part of the series. If sample selection is taken into control sequels’ do not excel one part movies in terms of the box office. What is more, with the help of Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition it was found out that the main factors which let the sequel earn more are the production budget, competitive environment, total time of the movie being in release and the number of opened theatres.
