Imperial Orientalism: Esper Ukhtomsky and His "Travels in the East of His Majesty Tsarevich, 1890-1891”
Прикладная и междисциплинарная история
In this thesis, I study the Eastern journey of tsesarevich Nicholas conducted in 1890-91. The chapters cover the preparation of the journey, its course, and coverage of it in the famous Ukhtomsky’s book Travels in the East of His Imperial Highness Tsesarevich in 1890–1891 (1893-1897). The aim is to research 1) the representation of the Orient in the book and 2) the voyage followed with the book as an element embedded in imperial scenario of power proposed by Wortman. While doing this research, I examined some published and unpublished sources that pushed me on a hypothesis on transferring of the British Empire experience of royal tours into Russian context.
