International Conference ‘State and Political Discourse in Russia’ Held in Venice

On June 17-18, Venice hosted the International Conference ‘State and Political Discourse in Russia’, organized by the Italian Foundation for Reset Dialogues on Civilizations (ResetDOC). The HSE was one of the co-organizers of the conference, together with London School of Economics and Political Science, Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies (Harvard University), Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (The George Washington University), Reves Center for International Studies (College of William and Mary), Universita Ca 'Foscari, and others.

This conference was the third in a series of conferences dedicated to the problems of post-Communist Russia.

Presentations were made by three representatives of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the HSE. Alexey Barabashev gave a talk on ‘The Discourse of Russian Bureaucracy and Its Influence on Political Discourse’. Olga Malinova spoke about ‘Political Experts and the State Political Discourse(s): Practices of Political Communication in Russia, 2008-2015’. Andrei Melville presented his paper on ‘New Conservatism as National Idea for Russia?’

The conference was also attended by Marlene Laruelle, Steve Hanson, Andrea Graziosi, Mark Kramer, Adam Michnik, Sergio Romano, Nina Khrushchev, Andrei Kortunov, Vladislav Zubok, and others.

The next conference, scheduled for next year, will focus on the prospects of Russian liberalism.
