In December 2019, the HSE Academic Council approved (minutes No. 16 dated December 20, 2019) the new Regulations on Academic Merit Bonuses. Accordingly, from 2021, the conditions for the Tier 3 bonus are changing, and new types of bonuses are being introduced: a bonus for regular publications in international peer-reviewed academic journals (‘long bonuses’) and a bonus for publications that make a particular contribution to the global academic reputation of HSE University (‘megabonus’), which is governed by separate Regulations.

After the Regulations were extensively discussed with the university staff, amendments to the Regulations were introduced in June.

The new Regulations do not change the Tier 1 and 2 bonuses.

Types and Timeframes for Academic Merit Bonus Payments

  • bonus for academic work (Tier 1 Bonus) – for 1 year (at Moscow and St. Petersburg campuses, this bonus is included in guaranteed salary payment for teaching staff);
  • bonus for academic success and contributions to HSE University’s academic reputation (Tier 2 Bonus) – for 2 years;
  • bonus for a publication in an international peer-reviewed academic journal (Tier 3 Bonus) – for 1 year;
  • bonus for regular publications in international peer-reviewed academic journals (‘long bonuses’) – for 5 years;
  • bonus for publications that make a particular contribution to the global academic reputation of HSE University (‘megabonus’) – for 3 years;
  • Rector’s bonus – as a result of a campaign, with the timeframe being set by the Rector.

Academic merit bonuses shall be set every year for the period from September 1 until August 31. In accordance with the bonus terms and conditions, the status of a bonus recipient is re-checked annually.

What Publications Are Considered?

  • Publication occurred within the 2 calendar years prior to the year of the ongoing academic merit bonus campaign;
  • the applicant has listed a sole affiliation with HSE University (for staff members who have worked for more than 1 year as of the beginning date of the campaign).

Publications that do not have affiliation with HSE University are also considered, but only for new staff members who have worked at the university for less than 1 year as of the beginning date of the campaign.

Affiliation

The full name of the relevant institution, indicated along with the surname of an applicant, serves as an affiliation.

The affiliation of an applicant with HSE University (in English) shall be specified as follows: HSE University.

The 2021 campaign and the following bonus campaigns will also consider publications using the university’s full name (National Research University Higher School of Economics).

Starting from 2023, single cases will be considered individually.

The full name of the university in other languages will be reconsidered. Information will be published on this page.
