Researchers Identify Link between Bilingualism and Cognitive Efficiency
An international team of researchers, including scholars from HSE University, has discovered that knowledge of a foreign language can improve memory performance and increase automaticity when solving complex tasks. The higher a person’s language proficiency, the stronger the effect. The results have been published in the journal Brain and Cognition.

A Russian-American team of researchers used convolutional neural networks to study high-resolution satellite images of three Siberian landscapes taken at intervals of 10-15 years

The neural network analysed nearly a million 12×12 m plots and found that the rate of shrub spread varies from 2.4% to 26.1% per decade, depending on local conditions. The study showed that mature shrubs prefer well-drained slopes, while new colonisation occurs on flatter areas, which opens up opportunities for predicting further shrubification of the Arctic under climate change conditions

On September 17–20, 2025, the First Caucasus School on Experimental Research and Cognitive Sciences took place at the Gornaya Legenda venue of Adyghe State University (ASU). The event was organised by the ASU Experimental Linguistics Laboratory, the HSE Centre for Language and Brain, and the HSE Centre for Sociocultural and Ethnolinguistic Studies. The school brought together over 50 participants—students, doctoral candidates, and early-career researchers from across Russia, along with lecturers and speakers from France, Serbia, China, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
