Dr Panos Pardalos is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida. He is also the Director of the Center for Applied Optimization. Dr Pardalos obtained a PhD degree from the University of Minnesota in Computer and Information Sciences. He has held visiting appointments at Princeton University, the DIMACS Center, the Institute of Mathematics and Applications, the FIELDS In stitute, AT&T Labs Research, Trier University, the Linkoping Institute of Technology and Universities in Greece. He has received numerous awards including University of Florida Research Foundation Professor, International Educator Award, Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award, Foreign Member of the Royal Academy of Doctors (Spain), Foreign Member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Petrovskaya Academy of Sciences and Arts (Russia) and Honorary Member of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Dr Pardalos has received the degrees of Honorary Doctor from Lobachevski University (Russia) and the V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics (Ukraine). He is a fellow of AAAS, a fellow of INFORMS and in 2001 he was awarded the Greek National Award and Gold Medal for Operations Research. Dr Pardalos is a world leading expert in Global and Combinatorial Optimization. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global Optimization, the Journal of Optimization Letters and the Journal of Computational Management Science. In addition, he is the managing editor of a number of book series and a member of the editorial board of several international journals. He is the author of several books and edited volumes. He has written numerous articles and has developed several wellknown software packages. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health and other government organizations.
The 1st International Conference on Network Analysis will take place on December 14 - 16, 2011 in Gainesville, Florida U.S.A. The conference is sponsored by the Center for Applied Optimization of the University of Florida. The purpose of this conference is to bring together scientists and engineers from industry, government, and universities to exchange knowledge and results in a broad range of topics relevant to the theory and practice of network analysis. Contributions are also sought that address the reliability of complex networks, software, theory, methodology and applications. The conference will result in a published refereed book (Springer Proceedings in Mathematics) containing material presented in the conference as well as other invited contributions.
The conference is to be hosted by the Center for Applied Optimization and the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department of the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida on 14 - 16 December 2011, and will take place at the J. Wayne Reitz Union.
On October 5th, high level HSE management and leading faculty members had a meeting with Panos Pardalos, Distinguished Professor of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Florida, USA, to discuss plans and future opportunities for a new Laboratory at the HSE branch in Nizhny Novgorod. The Laboratory of Algorithms and Technologies for Networks Analysis will be established through a grant from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. On 27 October 2011 Tatiana Karabchuk (Deputy Director at the LCSR) and Marina Nikitina (research assistant at the LCSR) gave a talk on “Subjective well-being of non-standard workers in Russia".

From October,3 to October,20 within the activities of the International laboratory for Education Policy Analysis at the Institute for Educational Studies series of advanced training seminars " Longitudinal studies in employment and education" were conducted by Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Human Resource Research at the Ohio State University Dr. Randall Olsen.
On October 20th a public lecture "Psychological adjustment and cultural identities of immigrant adolescents" by Eugene Tartakovsky, a professor at the University of Tel-Aviv (Israel) was held in Psychology Department within the scientific seminar “Culture matters”.

From October 13-14 a seminar on ‘Foresight and S&T and innovation policy: best practices’ took place at the HSE. The event was organized by the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge. The first day of the seminar was dedicated to relevant problems of Foresight studies, and the second one to the problems of innovation policy in different countries.
