HSE and Ca’ Foscari University Pursue Productive Partnership

As part of the International Partners Week, a ceremony of setting up Ca' Foscari University Information Corner at HSE University took place on June 19.

The official delegation of the Venetian university, headed by Michele Bugliesi, Rector of Ca’ Foscari, visited HSE University on June 17-20 to discuss further plans for collaboration and take part in the International Partners Week. The Ca’ Foscari  delegation included Rector Michele Bugliesi, Provost for International Relations Tiziana Lippiello, Director of International Office Mauro Cannone, and Moscow representative Valeria Brandina.  During the visit, the delegation met with HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov who emphasized the importance of broader information exchange and involvement of young faculty members and students in joint comparative research projects.

The two universities signed a cooperation agreement back in 2012, and starting in 2013, they have been offering student exchange programmes in economics, management, humanities, linguistics, international relations, and political science. There are also academic and research collaborations in economics and humanities, primarily in such fields as literature and philosophy.

In February 2018, HSE Rector Yaroslav Kuzminov, together with an HSE delegation, visited Ca' Foscari University for its 150th anniversary. Both sides agreed to further their cooperation and open bi-lateral representation units – the Ca’Foscari Information Corner at HSE and the HSE University Information Corner in Venice. These corners should contribute to further sharing of information about initiatives, cultural and educational events, academic programmes and joint research activities.

 Established in 1868, Ca' Foscari University (Venice) is one of Italy’s leading universities;

 23,000 students;

 8 departments (faculties) and 3 schools;

 Places in the Top-100 of global rankings for language study, and in the Top-250 in Economics and Econometrics;

 51 Ca' Foscari students and 54 HSE students have taken part in exchange programmes over the last 6 years.

Dr. Bugliesi, Rector of Ca' Foscari University, noted that the Information Corner represents a logical continuation of the two universities’ successful research and academic interaction. HSE students who are interested in potentially studying in Venice will be able to learn more about Ca' Foscari.

Intercultural workshops led by Ca' Foscari graduate students are currently being planned for Russian students who are now taking Italian

Bugliesi also stated that the university's leadership hopes to involve HSE Lyceum students in wider collaboration. Furthermore, next week, a group of HSE Lyceum school students is going to Venice to take part in Discover Ca' Foscari week (June 25-28).

Other future plans include working with the HSE School of Asian Studies to develop a double degree programme in contemporary Asian studies and conducting joint research projects in Digital Humanities and computer science.

Ivan Prostakov, Vice Rector at HSE University, in turn, noted that while the Ca' Foscari Information Corner was opened in Moscow, employees and students from all four HSE campuses are welcome to participate in the two universities’ projects. ‘This is a great opportunity for Russians to discover Italy, and for our Italian colleagues to explore Russia,’ he believes.

Greta Pais Marden Nanon, undergraduate student of Ca' Foscari University of Venice, majoring in economics and management, as well as Darya Smuseva, HSE MIEM 2nd year Master’s student in Computer Systems and Networks, Programmer at the Laboratory of 3D Imaging and Computer Graphics, shared their experience of participating in exchange programmes.

The topic of university information corners was also addressed at the International Partner Week roundtable Building Stronger Relations: The Role of On-Site Offices in Partner Countries and Universities chaired by Marina Batalina, where Tiziana Lippiello presented Ca’ Foscari University’s experience of running The Ca’ Foscari-Suzhou Office.
