Each story is unique, filled with ambition, perseverance, and meaningful change. Today, we are excited to share the story of Giovanny Simon Machado—a graduate of the Master’s programme 'Applied and Interdisciplinary History "Usable Pasts"'. Now, he is a professor at the Department of Social Work at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. This May, Prof. Machado came back to Russia as a participant of the HSE University–St Petersburg International Partners’ Week 2025. The Master’s programme 'Comparative Politics of Eurasia' trains specialists who can choose various professional paths. Students not only master theoretical aspects of international relations and politics but also develop their competencies in applied spheres. In this interview, Andrey Starodubtsev, academic supervisor of the programme, shares some details about the curriculum, student projects, and career opportunities for graduates.

In 2025, HSE University-St Petersburg opened the Centre for Russian Language and Culture at the School of Arts and Humanities. The centre offers various courses for international applicants, the largest of which is the 'Pre-University Programme', a Russian preparatory course for those intending to enrol in full-time bachelor's and master's programmes. One of the oldest programmes at HSE University-St Petersburg is the English-taught Bachelor's programme 'Sociology and Social Informatics'. It has existed for more than ten years, and over this time, the programme has helped many students gain interdisciplinary skills and find their own unique career paths. In this article, Academic Supervisor Anna Nemirovskaya explains how the programme has adapted to modern realities, what sociology truly is, and how one can implement a sociological education.

One of the main goals of HSE University-St Petersburg is to create an international environment on the campus. As a part of this work, the university creates more and more programmes that provide an opportunity to study fully in English. Among them is the master's programme 'Data Analytics for Politics and Society'. Over the several years of its existence, the programme has already shown great results, and many of its graduates have become successful both in business and academia. We talked to Aleksei Sorbale, Academic Supervisor of the programme, about changing the teaching language of the programme, students' projects, and competitive selection for the programme.

In November 2023, a representative office of HSE University opened in Indonesia. This new educational hub is designed to help students from the Asia-Pacific (APAC) who are planning to study in Russia. The representative office is based at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in the city of Surabaya. The office is headed by Bima Yatna Anugerah Ramadhani, HSE University-St Petersburg graduate of the Master’s programme ‘Management and Analytics for Business’. In the interview, Bima Ramadhani reflects on his studies at HSE campus in St Petersburg, talks about his work at the State University of Surabaya and elaborates on the further activities of the HSE University representative office.

Since her school years in Kazakhstan, Darya Bashlayeva has dreamed about HSE University. Now, several years later, her dream has come true—she came to HSE University in St Petersburg under the exchange programme. She is currently studying the Chinese language, Asian literature and Political Science. Read on to learn more about Darya's story.

Carlos J. Rincon already had an eventful career before he ended up studying and teaching at HSE University-St Petersburg. The professor was born in Colombia and worked in his native country and the USA in the financial sector before starting his academic career. Not wanting to rest on his laurels, Carlos enrolled in the Master’s programme ‘Finance’ at HSE University-St Petersburg, where he has been studying and teaching since 2019.
