Course Syllabus
Abstract
Introduction to research methodsFor successful research work doctoral students must have the basic skills of scientific research, be able to work independently with basic information sources, select literature on a given topic, prepare abstract surveys on the topic of research, analyze concepts and entities of ideal objects, master the skills of using information technologies and databases.Part II: Publishing academic papers is the final stage of research work of the student, and it defines the level of his/her research competence. Writing academic articles can be described as a process with consistent steps following which the student increases the probability for paper acceptance. Publishing academic papers based on context preparation, the choice of outlet (journal), strategy and tactics of interaction with editors and reviewers while submission process.
Learning Objectives
- Acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary to conduct individual research work in the area of the chosen profile, prepare research papers and improve relevant competencies.
- Learn the main stages of preparation, submission and publishing processes in leading academic journals. The course suggests that each student attending the class will be able critically review academic articles content and structure, paper introduction, theoretical discussion, methodological section, results and discussion part, and conclusion.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Understand academic articles’ structure and be able to assess them critically
- Learn how to write the main parts of academic paper (abstract, introduction, theoretical analysis, methodology, results and discussion, conclusion)
- Learn how to choose the proper outlet (journal)
- Learn how to submit a paper to a particular journal
- Learn the main stages in submission and review processes
- Know the main rules of integration with editors and reviewer
- Learn how to write response letters and lists of improvements
- Learn how to act as a reviewer in a refereed academic journal.
- mastering the methods of searching and summarizing scientific literature, working with specialized statistical resources;
- development of skills of independent work with reference and legal information systems;
- formation of skills among doctoral students in setting research problems and determining the basic conditions for empirical research in the study area;
- formation of skills among doctoral students in the formulation of research hypotheses, theories, knowledge and skills of applying research methodology in management;
- acquisition of skills to analyze practical situations;
- improving the skills of public presenting research findings and conducting research discussions;
- improving the skills of preparing publications (scientific reports, conference papers, articles for refereed academic journals) both in Russian and in English;
- usage of theoretical tools for the case analysis.

- To know the requirements of the Regulations on Awarding Academic Degrees at HSE University and of the Dissertation Council in Management regarding the PhD dissertation, its structure, summary and the candidate’s publications, as well as the pre-defense procedure
- To be able to structure the dissertation (as a stand-alone integral research work or as a collection of articles) and its introduction in accordance with the established requirements
- To be able to formulate the research problem, research question, aim, objectives, object and subject of the study, ensuring their logical consistency with the methodology and results
- To be able to formulate scientific novelty, the main provisions submitted for defense, theoretical contribution and practical significance of the research
- To master the skills of publicly presenting dissertation research results within a limited time frame and conducting a scholarly discussion
- To be able to critically evaluate peers’ research and to give and use constructive feedback to improve the dissertation

- Topic 1. The PhD dissertation in management: requirements, structure, presentation and preparation for the pre-defense
Assessment Elements
- ParticipationStudents’ participation and contribution to class discussion will be assessed during the course.
- Current tasks during the courseA series of tasks will be given to students, mostly related to analyzing and presenting an academic paper or own research.
- Examination in the form of an individual written research designFor this task, you will be required to submit a written version of the extended research proposal (min 8-10 pages double-spaced) that includes research motivation, research question, selected methodology and justification of the made choices. The written essay is submitted once the course is finished.
- Acting as a discussant on the other student’s paper in class and preparing a written referee report
- Participation in discussionThe doctoral student’s activity in discussing the dissertation requirements is assessed, as well as the quality of questions and feedback given to peers during their presentations (including completing the peer-review sheet for at least two presentations).
- Seminar presentationA 15-minute presentation of the main provisions of the dissertation followed by discussion (5–10 minutes). Recommended structure: topic and relevance; research gap and problem; research question, aim and objectives; object and subject; theoretical framework and conceptual model; methodology, data and methods; main results; main provisions submitted for defense; scientific novelty and theoretical contribution; practical significance; approbation and publications (compliance with the requirements of the Dissertation Council in Management); plan for completing the work.
- “Mock pre-defense”The “mock pre-defense” simulates the procedure of the preliminary defense of the dissertation at an extended meeting of the Department. The doctoral student delivers a 15-minute presentation that takes into account the feedback received at the seminar and answers questions from the committee (supervisor, course instructors, invited members of the Department) and reviewers. No later than 7 days before the “mock pre-defense”, the doctoral student submits: (1) the text of the dissertation introduction (or a working draft of the dissertation); (2) the presentation; (3) a list of publications on the dissertation topic indicating their status and journal level in accordance with the requirements of the Dissertation Council in Management; (4) a brief response (up to 1 page) to the comments received at the seminar.
