Course Syllabus

Abstract

The discipline «Practical Сourse of the Chinese Language. Upper-Intermediate Level» is taught to junior students majoring in «Linguistics» from B1 level. The main goal of the course is to develop students’ foreign language communicative competence at the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Learning Objectives

  • Development of foreign language communicative competence at the HSK 4 level, which assumes the student’s readiness and ability to freely carry out everyday and academic communication in Chinese in most communicative situations, as well as to use Chinese to implement the most common, simple professional tasks.

  • Can understand fluently the general meaning, main ideas and most details of spoken and written Chinese, including specialized texts typical of academic communication.
  • Construct detailed, coherent and reasoned oral statements in Chinese and generally communicate effectively in most situations typical for the sphere of academic communication.
  • Create structured, coherent and generally competent written texts in Chinese, taking into account the basic norms and rules of academic communication.

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Classroom work
    Classroom work – the control element evaluates the student’s work, which includes, but is not limited to, the following components: participation in classes, participation in discussions and group work, answers to the teacher’s questions, preparation for classes, homework, independent work, activity, involvement and initiative. This control element evaluates the student’s use of a foreign language to solve various communicative tasks in the process of direct interaction between the teacher and students in the classroom, including with the support of prepared homework.
  • non-blocking Current control module 1
    Current control module 1: This element of control checks the current level of development of the student's language skills and speech abilities and includes the assessment of phonetic, lexical, grammar tests, listening and reading tests and tasks, as well as oral and written speech products created by the student. Tasks can be placed in Smart LMS. The final grade is the arithmetic mean of all elements of the current control. The final grade is not rounded. Current control module 1: include the following types of tasks: recitation of texts/dialogues from memory, prepared monologue, dictation, letter to a friend. When checking written work, the following aspects are taken into account: accurate spelling of syllables and tones (pinyin), correct stroke order, knowledge of graphemes, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, volume of written statement. When checking oral questioning, the following aspects are taken into account: content, organization of oral statement, phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, volume of statement.

    Current control module 2: This element of control checks the current level of development of the student's language skills and speech abilities and includes the assessment of phonetic, lexical, grammar tests, listening and reading tests and tasks, as well as oral and written speech products created by the student.     Final written work – this element of control evaluates the level of development of the student’s lexical and grammatical skills, listening and reading skills and abilities, as well as written speech proficiency for solving various communication tasks. The certification work consists of several sections: Listening, Hieroglyphics/Reading, Vocabulary and Grammar, Writing. The certification work is carried out during the last class of the module. The maximum score for each section is 25. The final maximum score is 100.

    The oral exam is held during the session and involves the student solving a given communicative task in accordance with their level of foreign language proficiency.
