Course Syllabus

Abstract

The ESP Design course is tailored to meet the needs of students in creative disciplines, focusing on enhancing their English language skills through materials directly related to their field. By integrating language learning with design-specific content, the course equips students with the ability to communicate effectively in both professional and global contexts. Through interactive lectures, case studies, and collaborative group projects, students develop proficiency in articulating design concepts and engaging in discussions relevant to their discipline. The course emphasizes practical application by fostering creativity and problem-solving skills while aligning language acquisition with real-world design challenges. By the end of the program, students will be prepared to confidently present their ideas, participate in international collaborations, and navigate professional design settings. This tailored approach ensures that students not only improve their English proficiency but also gain valuable insights into the global design industry.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Classroom work
Written and oral assignments based on individual or group tasks; prepared and unprepared spoken responses; lexical and grammar exercises offered for completion and/or checked during class (assigned/not assigned as a homework) based on course materials (to introduce new lexis); presentations, prepared and prepared monologues and dialogues.
  • non-blocking Homework
current written assignments (mainly in a test format) including tasks based on reading materials, audio and video content, and their combinations; assignments aimed at preparing for current tests and module tests. These tasks may slightly vary depending on the group's level. Written assignments are conducted at least once per topic studied. The number of assignments must be at least three; the types of assignments are determined by the instructor based on the group level.
  • non-blocking Current and module tests
Written lexical and lexical-grammar tests, reading and listening tests based on authentic and teacher-developed course materials. Tests are conducted at least once per topic studied. The number of tests must be at least three; types are determined by the instructor based on the group's level.
  • non-blocking Final project
The final assessment consists of delivering and defending the design project. The project itself is a design project developed by the student within his area of specialization. The topic is defined and approved by the design instructor. The student is required to give a professional presentation in English that comprehensively addresses all the requirements outlined in the project brief, simulating a real-world scenario of presenting to a client. Projects may be completed individually or in teams, according to the format specified by the student’s primary design discipline. In the case of team projects, all members are expected to contribute equally to research, preparation, and defense.
