Course Syllabus

Abstract

The discipline is one of the specialized subjects of the trajectory "Machine translation and language localization", it is taught at the 1st year of Master's degree. The study of the discipline is based on the knowledge and practical skills acquired in the course of mastering the courses "Theory and History of Translation", "Practical Training in Translation from English to Russian", "Practical Training in Translation from Russian to English". The foundation is laid for the study of the disciplines "Text editing and post-machine processing", "Technical translation", "Basics of language localization" and professionally-oriented project activities in IT, construction, medicine and oil and gas industry

Learning Objectives

  • Familiarize students with the main genre and stylistic features of scientific and technical, formal business, and professionally oriented texts in Russian and English.
  • Teach them to conduct a pre-translation analysis of a text, identifying its key features and potential translation challenges.
  • Increase students’ proficiency in the lexical, grammatical, and stylistic techniques of translation characteristic of specialized texts (translation of terms, clichés, passive constructions, modality, etc.).
  • Develop their ability to apply modern information technologies and resources (electronic dictionaries, terminology databases, text corpora) to ensure translation quality, edit and analyze a completed translation and justify the translation choices made.

  • To be able to edit and analyze a completed translation and justify the translation choices made.
  • To translate specialized texts of moderate complexity from a foreign language into Russian and from Russian into a foreign language.

    Students are expected to respond to oral tasks (participation in seminar discussions/ answers to lecture questions), make comments in seminars, report om homework tasks on assigned topics).

    Translation of the given texts.

    Doing quizzes on translation difficulties.

    Oral defense of the individual/group project.
