Course Syllabus

Abstract

The goal of this course is to present the fundamentals of qualitative social research, as well as to develop students’ skills of using qualitative methods in their own empirical research. Students will learn how to plan, to organize and to implement qualitative research, how to collect data and how to analyze them afterwards. In the frame of this research seminar, the focus will be done on the development of practical skills. The main idea of the seminar: learning through experience. Students will learn qualitative research by doing it. They will develop their own research design, will conduct the interviews and participant observation, will analyze collected data.

    Objective: To creatу a coherent and feasible plan for researching a chosen social phenomenon. This assignment will develop students' skills in logical scholarly planning, operationalization of concepts, and ethical consideration. Format: Small research teams of 4-5 students. Submission is a single, cohesive document (approx. 3-5 pages ) outlining your research design + document with research guide for qualitative interview (no less than 10 questions) Core Task: In your team, choose a specific and relevant topic for qualitative research. Develop a complete qualitative research design to explore it, culminating in a detailed instrument for data collection (interview guide).

    Experience in collecting qualitative empirical data, following a developed research design.
  • non-blocking Qualitative Analysis & Reporting
    Applying systematic qualitative analysis methods to empirical data, translating raw data into meaningful insights, and communicating findings in a clear, compelling, and academically rigorous format.
