Abstract
The course “Approaches to Staging Shakespearean Plays” is designed to prepare early-career professionals in the field of acting who specialize in working with Shakespearean material within a theatrical framework. The relevance of the course stems from the challenging task of translating the language and dramaturgy of the seventeenth century into a contemporary stage context: it requires not only precise mastery of the original text but also the ability to devise modern artistic solutions without compromising the spirit of the era, its rhythm, and its semantic depth. The primary objective of the course is to develop students’ comprehensive competence in staging Shakespeare’s plays, spanning from linguistic and character analysis to the realization of a production concept within the rehearsal process and performance before an audience. Teaching methods include lexical-rhythmic analysis of Shakespearean text, scenographic improvisation, partner and group work, analysis of production examples, and assignments for the preparation of scenes and monologues.
Learning Objectives
- Master the methodology for analyzing Shakespearean text—lexicon, rhythm, meter, caesura, and intonation—to accurately convey the meaning and structure of the original language
- Develop the ability to transform linguistic dramaturgy into a contemporary stage context without compromising the spirit of the era, its rhythm, and the depth of semantics
- Strengthen acting craft through stage improvisation, work in pairs and groups, and analysis of production examples to broaden the range of expressive possibilities
- Master the practice of preparing scenes and monologues: material selection, character work, temporal decisions, and vocal dynamics
- Learn to critically evaluate productions: systematic analysis of strengths and weaknesses of interpretations, formation of well-argued visual-perceptual critique, and distillation of lessons for future projects
