Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course will provide participants with an understanding of the techniques used to analyze major financial problems of modern company in market environment. We begin by reviewing the basic principles of financial management. Next we deepen our examination of discounted cashflow approach and move to risk and return analysis. Then, we look at investment analysis and foundation of investment decisions and its connection with the performance analysis. We will study basic models of valuation of corporate capital, including pricing models for primary financial assets, real assets valuation and investment projects analysis, capital structure and various types of corporate capital employed, derivative assets and contingent claims on assets. We will deal with evaluating different management decisions and its influence on corporate performance and value. The course requires the knowledge in micro and macroeconomics, accounting, theory of finance, financial management. The course is based on lectures, seminars and self-study.

Assessment Elements

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Lecture Quizzes
    Tests on every lecture from lecture 2 to lecture 16. Tests consist of 1-2 questions based on the topics of the lecture which they are taking place on. The questions are based on a specific chapters of the main textbook. The students will know which chapters to read in advance. Only those students who attend the lecture from the beginning can receive marks for the quizz. It is not allowed to come and participate in a quiz for those who have not attended the whole lecture. The quizz can take place in the beginning, in the middle or in the end of the lecture.
  • non-blocking Workshop Quizzes
    Tests on every workshop. Tests consist of 1-2 questions based on the topics of the workshop which they are taking place on. The questions are based on a specific chapters of the main textbook. The students will know which chapters to read in advance. Only those students who attend the workshop from the beginning can receive marks for the quizz. It is not allowed to participate in a quiz for those who have not attended the whole workshop. The quizz can take place in the beginning, in the middle or in the end of the workshop.
  • non-blocking Midterm
    Set of problems to solve. May be multiple choice questions or open-ended numerical questions. Duration - 40 min. Proctoring system is used. Not allowed to use own devices, only the computer provided. in the computer class.
  • non-blocking Project
    The students are asked to perform business valuation for a firm of their choice. Group work (groups of max 4 people)
  • non-blocking Exam
    Set of problems to solve. May be multiple choice questions or open-ended numerical questions. Duration - 60 min. Proctoring system is used. Not allowed to use own devices, only the computer provided. in the computer class.
