Course Syllabus
Abstract
Research Seminar course designed for doctoral students in “Economics and Management” is an educational component of the postgraduate education system which aims at forming Doctoral students’ knowledge and developing their skills on how to conduct individual research work in the area of the chosen profile, prepare research papers, including thesis and improve relevant competencies.
Learning Objectives
- acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct individual research work in the area of the chosen profile, prepare research papers and improve relevant competencies.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- To master the methods of searching and summarizing scientific literature, working with specialized statistical resources
- To form doctoral students’ skills in the formulation of research hypotheses, theories, knowledge and skills of applying research methodology in management
- To acquire the skills to analyze practical situations
- To improve the skills of public presenting research findings and conducting research discussions
- To improve the skills of preparing publications (scientific reports, conference papers, articles for refereed academic journals) both in Russian and in English
- To form doctoral students’ skills among in setting research problems and determining the basic conditions for empirical research in the study area
- To develop skills of independent work with reference and legal information systems usage of theoretical tools for the research project

- Topic 1. Problem formulation and research question development
- 2. Creating, developing, and writing theory
- 3. Literature review: how and why to do literature review?
- 4. Designing variance and process studies
- 5. Communicating research contribution
- 6. Academic paper structure
- 7. Preparation for publication
- 8. Manuscript submission and following up
- 9. Acting as a reviewer: Gaining a better understanding of how to prepare a referee report for an academic journal.
- 10. Publishing in international academic journals: secrets of success
Assessment Elements
- ParticipationStudents’ participation and contribution to class discussion will be assessed during the course.
- Current tasks during the courseA series of tasks will be given to students, mostly related to analyzing and presenting an academic paper or own research.
- Examination in the form of an individual written research designFor this task, you will be required to submit a written version of the extended research proposal (min 8-10 pages double-spaced) that includes research motivation, research question, selected methodology and justification of the made choices.
- Participation in and contribution to the discussions in classTo pass the course, the students should attend at least 60% of the meetings.
- Presentation of the student’s own paperPresentation includs the reaction on the critical points raised by the audience and the discussant in class
- Acting as a discussant on the other student’s paper in class and preparing a written referee report
