Course Syllabus
Abstract
The aim of the course "English for Specific Purposes in the Field of Information Technology" is to develop students' foreign language professional communicative competence at no less than B2+/C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course is designed for first-year students of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics and Computer Science, whose English proficiency is at least at B2 level (according to the CEFR).
Upon successful completion of the course, learners are expected to acquire academic and professional communication skills necessary for using English as a tool for professional work and interaction within professional contexts. These skills are also essential for further study at the Bachelor's and Master's levels, as well as for conducting research in their professionally defined field.
Another objective of the course is to build a specialised conceptual and terminological apparatus used in the field of information technology, serving as a foundation for organising and successfully participating in professional discourse. Students who successfully complete the programme will be prepared to take internationally recognised examinations and obtain certified qualifications, enabling them to continue their education in international programmes within their specialty.
The course curriculum includes the following topics:
Computer Users, Computer Architecture, Computer Applications, Peripherals, Interview: Former Student, Operating Systems, Graphical User Interfaces, Multimedia, Networks, The Internet, The World Wide Web, Application Programs, Interview: Computing Support Officer, Websites.
Learning Objectives
- The aim of the course "English for Specific Purposes in the Field of Information Technologies" is to: 1) develop the skills and abilities of academic and professional communication necessary for using English as a tool for professional work and interaction within the professional communicative environment for educational, scientific, and career purposes, as well as for subsequent studies in bachelor's and master's programs and for conducting research activities in the professionally defined field. 2) develop a specialized conceptual and terminological framework used in the field of information technologies as a means for organizing and successfully participating in professional discourse. 3) develop in undergraduate students a foreign language communicative competence of at least level B2 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR).
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Searching, analysing and evaluating specialized information in English necessary for understanding and solving academic and professional tasks in the sphere of Computer Science.
- Applying commonly used and specialized vocabulary on the topic of ESP "Computer Applications", demonstrating the ability to compose a structured monologue and describe specified computer applications, employing linguistic means appropriate to the professional communicative situation.
- Applying IT vocabulary on the studied topics, both general and in the field of information technology. Describing operating systems, and speaking on their parameters as well as employing linguistic means appropriate to the professional communicative situation.
- Applying IT-specialized vocabulary on the studied topic in the field of information technology, demonstrating the ability to compose a structured monologue on the topic of describing graphical user interfaces, and employing linguistic means appropriate to the professional communicative situation.
