Abstract

This course explores antiquity from a perspective not found in written texts—through material sources (buildings, pottery, coins, burials)—and teaches students how to work with them professionally. It examines the archaeology of Greece, Rome, and the Northern Black Sea region using a wide range of tools: stratigraphy and chronology, ceramic typology, burial rites, numismatics, and digital methods. Using case studies of Schliemann’s work at Troy and Mycenae, the excavations at Pompeii, and other ancient sites, students learn to independently date finds, interpret stratigraphic sections, and construct a Harris matrix. Throughout the course, students explore the long journey from ancient and Renaissance antiquarianism to the professional methodology of modern archaeology. All the methods for working with material sources that students learn are equally applicable to Byzantine material, broadening the range of sources for future research. The course directly prepares students for archaeological practice: keeping a field journal, working with finds, and presenting a group project on a specific site.

Learning Objectives

To develop the skills needed to work with archaeological sources and concepts based on the analysis of material culture, in order to study ancient and medieval (Byzantine) history.
To develop students’ ability to present and discuss information on the history of archaeology and contemporary methods of archaeological research, including during public presentations and in their own research.
To teach students how to work on a collaborative project investigating an archaeological site using stratigraphic and other archaeological methods, as well as digital archaeology tools, including preparing them for collaborative work at an archaeological site as part of their archaeological practice.
To develop students’ ability to distinguish between the material cultures of different societies, as well as those of different social groups within a single society, and to use these distinctions as a basis for analyzing ancient history in socio-historical, ethical, and intercultural contexts.

Expected Learning Outcomes

formulates a definition of archaeology and its place amongst the sciences that study the past;
identifies the main stages in the development of archaeology as a science;
summarises the main tenets of contemporary approaches in archaeology;
formulates the key characteristics of the concept of ‘archaeological culture’;
distinguishes between different approaches to dating archaeological strata and artefacts;
the student is able to keep a field diary during archaeological fieldwork;
explains the application of methods from other disciplines in archaeology (numismatics, epigraphy, natural science methods, etc.);
applies archaeological methodology to analyse the structure of an archaeological site;

Семинарские занятия
Семинарские занятия проводятся в виде дискуссий по поставленной теме/проблеме, в ходе которых студент должен продемонстрировать знание археологических методов и литературы, предложенных для обсуждения.
Итоговый проект
Цель проекта - изучение отдельного археологического памятника через анализ: истории его археологического изучения, датировки как всего памятника, так и отдельных его объектов.
Экзамен
Форма проведения – устный очный экзамен с билетами.
