Course Syllabus

Abstract

This English course for beginners aims to develop students' foreign language communicative competence to a level not lower than B1. This competence is understood not as an abstract sum of knowledge, skills, and abilities, but as "a set of students' personal qualities (value-semantic orientations, knowledge, skills, abilities) and is defined as the capacity to solve problems and independently find answers to questions arising in the process of academic, socio-cultural, and everyday communication in a foreign language." In accordance with the above, the following course objectives have been defined: systematizing previously acquired knowledge and developing skills in both prepared and spontaneous speech, forming and improving students' lexical and grammatical skills using authentic texts on general everyday topics. This level of proficiency is necessary for solving socio-communicative tasks in various areas of socio-cultural and everyday activities, as well as at all stages of academic work and for further self-education. Achieving the specified level of communicative competence is fundamental to implementing the principle of academic mobility in the global educational space. It enables students to master any educational programs and courses in a foreign language, whether in-person, blended, or fully distance learning formats. This program is designed for first-year students who studied German, French, or other foreign languages in school. Upon completion of the course and upon achieving a level of English proficiency not lower than B1, they proceed to the second-year program on a common basis. As language support, students can choose from various courses within the system of additional language education.

Learning Objectives

• The course objectives are to develop communication skills required for using English in academic and research contexts, to build oral and written communication abilities, language proficiency, and sociocultural competence, to enhance research skills through the use of English-language resources, to help undergraduate students to achieve a communicative competence in English of at least B1 level (CEFR).

Expected Learning Outcomes

• Students use active vocabulary on the topic under study, compose a structured monologue on a given topic and perform reading, listening and written tasks in the appropriate format.
