Course Syllabus

Abstract

The focus will be done on the analysis of the concepts of civic engagement/civic participation/citizenship and the specificity of youth civic engagement/participation in modern societies. During the course, we will learn about theories that describe modern civic participation, citizenship, including a digital one. We also consider the relations between the youth, society, and the political sphere. The course will present the theoretical backgrounds of studying youth civic participation in the modern world and will include the practical part of conducting an empirical analysis of youth civic participation and personal student's experience.

Learning Objectives

• The aim of this course is to discuss the concept of youth civic participation in the context of modern societies and globalization. The focus will be done on the analysis of the theoretical concepts and personal experiences of being a citizen.

Expected Learning Outcomes

• - identify socially significant problems and propose solutions to them based on the use of relevant scientific theories, concepts,approaches and social technologies
• - improve and develop his/her intellectual and cultural level
• be able to conduct professional (including research) activities in the international environment
• be able to identify the needs and interests of social groups, propose mechanisms for their coordination among themselves for the development of social communities
• identify and discover patterns, invent new ways and instruments of professional activity
• Demonstrate a critical understanding of the key theoretical frameworks in citizenship studies, youth agency, and digital participation
• Critically evaluate the relationship between formal citizenship (legal status) and lived citizenship (everyday experiences of belonging, exclusion, and agency) through the application of sociological concepts to personal and collective narratives.
• Design and conduct qualitative self-research using ethnographic methods, including peer-to-peer interviewing, structured diary-keeping, and critical digital self-auditing, while adhering to ethical principles of informed consent and anonymisation.
• Synthesise individual biographical data into a collaborative analytical narrative, identifying patterns, tensions, and dissonances that illuminate the complexities of youth participation in contemporary society.
• Analyse and interpret real-world case studies (policy briefs, news articles, youth consultation materials) through the lens of multiple theoretical perspectives, comparing and contrasting their explanatory power and identifying their limitations.
• Critically reflect on their own positionality and lived experiences as young adults, demonstrating advanced reflexive skills that connect personal biography to broader structural, political, and digital dynamics shaping civic engagement today.

  Activity during seminars and preparation for the seminars (readings, analysis of empirical cases, presentations)
• Collective (Collaborative) Autoethnography Project
  In small groups students prepare a collective autoethnographic project
• Written Exam
  A hand-written critical analysis of a case study (example of youth participation)
