Course Syllabus
Abstract
Film is omnivorous, incorporating into itself literature, painting, still photography, and music. The discourse around it reflects this omnivorous character, often borrowing concepts from different arts. In this course, we will look at the relationship between film and other media, grounding our discussion both in theory and in specific films.
Learning Objectives
- use concepts from film theory, media theory and sound studies to analyze relationships between film and other media
- formulate a researched argument about a specific encounter between film and another medium
Expected Learning Outcomes
- analyze how relationships between film, photography and painting are forged on-screen
- analyze how relationships between film, photography and painting are conceived in media theories
- analyze how film's relationships with theatre are reflected on-screen and in film theory
- analyze the relationship between sound and image, using theoretical lenses from film studies and sound studies
