Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed for graduate students who have some knowledge accounting methods and practices. The course covers International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Concepts Framework and major formats of financial statements according to IFRS. Following that, the course is focused on recognition, measurement, and disclosure for such elements of financial accounting as Cash and Cash Equivalents, Receivables, Inventory and biological assets, Long-term Fixed and Intangible assets. The course includes the concepts of accounting and reporting for Lease operations (financial and operating leases). This course is a part of compulsory core courses of the online Master degree program and is designed to ensure the basic professional competences of the master student in the field of financial reporting.

  • Identify and classify the main types of financial instruments and derivative financial instruments, applying the business model assessment and the SPPI test.
  • Perform initial recognition and valuation of financial instruments in accordance with IFRS requirements.
  • Apply subsequent accounting, valuation, and derecognition procedures to financial instruments throughout their lifecycle.
  • Apply the principles of IFRS 13 to measure fair value, including the use of appropriate valuation techniques, data inputs, and the fair value hierarchy.
  • Identify indicators of impairment and determine the recoverable amount of assets and cash-generating units in accordance with IAS 36.
  • Perform accounting procedures for impairment of assets and analyze practical impairment scenarios in accordance with IFRS requirements.
  • Apply acquisition accounting principles and perform the mechanics of full consolidation for a group of companies.
  • Prepare the consolidated statement of comprehensive income and analyze consolidated financial results using practical examples.
  • Apply investment consideration and fair value adjustments in the preparation of consolidated financial statements.
  • Define and calculate non-controlling interest (NCI) and account for intra-group trading in accordance with IFRS.
  • Analyze and apply the principles of mid-year acquisitions and consolidation exemption in group reporting scenarios.
  • Identify and classify investments in associates and joint ventures in accordance with IAS 28 and IFRS 11.
  • Apply the equity method to account for investments in associates and joint ventures in the consolidated statement of financial position.
  • Reflect the results of activities of associates and joint ventures in the consolidated statement of comprehensive income using practical examples.
  • Identify and account for step-by-step acquisitions, including scenarios involving the transition from significant influence to control and control-to-control transactions.
  • Apply the accounting principles for disposals of subsidiaries and other changes in group structure in accordance with IFRS.
  • Analyze the impact of acquisitions and disposals on the parent's accounts and consolidated financial statements through practical examples.
  • Apply the accounting principles for transactions in foreign currency, including initial recognition, subsequent measurement, and reporting of exchange differences.
  • Translate the financial statements of foreign operations into the presentation currency and analyze the effects of exchange rate changes through practical examples.
  • Explain the principles of IAS 33 and calculate both basic and diluted earnings per share (EPS), taking into account factors that influence the computation.
  • Apply the requirements of IFRS 2 to account for share-based payment transactions, including equity-settled and cash-settled arrangements.
  • Analyze practical examples of EPS calculation and share-based payments and interpret their impact on financial reporting and shareholder value.
