Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course studies twentieth-century political history on the example of various countries, both within Europe and outside of it. The course will pay particular attention to the methods and approaches (both traditional and more recent ones) available for the study of political history and how those can be applied to analysis of several political projects. While in the course several individual political systems, such as the Republic of Turkey, Gaullism or the process of European unification, and their functions will be examined, we will also study how political ideas and concepts shaped political decisions and realities and how, in turn, the challenges of reality influenced political ideas.
Learning Objectives
- to introduce students to the political history of twentieth-century Europe and the world
- to gain knowledge about important political events, systems and politicians
- to familiarize students with key historiographical debates about twentieth-century history
- to develop skills in close reading, critical evaluation and analysis of political documents and relevant secondary literature
- to enable students to explore the topic of twentieth-century political history further and to relate it to their own field of research interests
- to enhance students’ foreign language skills and apply them to individual research and presentations
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Masters new research methods independently , changes the scientific and production profile of his/her activities (УК-3); Able to work with information: identify, evaluate and use information from a variety of sources for scientific and professional purposes (including with a systematic approach) (ОПК-1); Is able to conduct independent fundamental and applied research (ПК-1)
- Assesses information and predicts given objectives (ПК-9) Is able to analyze and propose scientific interpretation of historical events in their interrelation
- Develop and apply new research methods (ОПК-2)
- Able to outline the key arguments presented in the materials under discussion, ask analytical questions about the text, and participate in conceptual discussions.
