Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course introduces modern methods of the project organization and execution and teaches students the basics of traditional and new Agile project management techniques emerging from the industry practice and research works. The first part of the course is devoted to the study of the traditional, plan-driven project management, its tools, templates, and processes. The second part focuses on Agile methods in the conditions of uncertainty. Each part contains the formulation of the basic concepts and principles as well as the material necessary to acquire practical skills how to use modern project management techniques. Several topics included in the course are of a broader nature than project management and will be useful in other domains.

- Students learn key project parameters and their dependences
- Students learn varieties of the Project Management Life Cycles
- Students learn the basics of the Strategic Project Management and corresponding tools
- Students learn how to scope, plan, launch, execute, and close a project using the traditional method
- Students learn how to operate in the collaborative project team
- Students learn how to measure a project and manage its risks
- Students learn basics of lean project management
- Students learn Agile values and principles
- Students learn how to scope, plan, launch, execute, and close a project using an Agile method
- Students learn procedures, practices, and artifacts of Agile methods (Scrum, Kanban)
- Students learn how to scale an Agile project
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Be able to formally define the specific project (in a Project Definition Document/Project Charter)
- Be able to select a project management method appropriate for the specific project
- Be able to define the location of the specific project in the strategic landscape of an organization
- Be able to scope, plan, launch, execute, and close a project using the traditional method
- Be able to structure and manage a collaborative project team
- Be able to manage requirements and crips of the project
- Be able to use metrics, reports, and processes to manage the project and its risks
- To define the goals, objectives and parameters of the project
- To choose the appropriate methodology and determine the way the project is implemented
- To develop a project plan
- To distribute responsibilities among project participants
- To organize effective interaction between the participants
- To monitor the execution of tasks
- To assess and monitor risks
- To analyze the results of the project and evaluate its effectiveness
- To use procedures, practices, and artifacts of Agile methods (Scrum, Kanban)
